New planning rules that will give councils more power over approving green developments have been announced by the government.
John Healey, housing and planning minister, said the move - which is one of three policy changes - will benefit local authorities.
It will enable them to have greater control over where green residential and
business property is built and ensure sustainable sources of energy are used so as to cut carbon dioxide emissions.
"Overhauled planning policies will act as a new green planning rulebook," he remarked, adding that the guidelines will give councils "a new blueprint" for approving
commercial property and housing developments.
Mr Healey added that the changes will help councils across the country meet their "ambitious low carbon targets".
Two commercial property firms recently signed up to an initiative aimed at cutting the greenhouse gas emissions of London's
commercial real estate.
Prupim and the Blackstone Group have both agreed to be part of The Better Buildings Partnership.
