A London
commercial property used by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has become the first major office in the UK to receive an 'outstanding' rating from the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (Breeam).
The 48,000 sq m building, located close to Tower Bridge, won the accolade after scoring at least 85% in assessments by the building standards body.
Waste heat is used to cool and warm the structure, which was built using concrete consisting of 80% recycled aggregate.
Partner at the business services company Roger Reeves said the idea behind the new
business property was to "raise the bar" in terms of how office buildings perform from an environmental and sustainable standpoint.
"This assessment sends a really clear message that planning for the sustainable use of resources, in detail and right through the process, can make good business sense," he added.
BREAAM, which is used to assess buildings around the world, provides an overall score that fits into one of five bands, ranging from 'pass' to 'outstanding'.
