A new
business property for supermarket chain Asda could be created in Cheltenham, after proposals were recommended for approval.
Cheltenham Borough Council made the decision concerning the
commercial property development, but some groups are unhappy with the move, the Gloucestershire Echo reported.
A rival firm is said to be concerned the proposed store would negatively affect its regeneration project, which is backed by another supermarket chain.
However, planning officer Martin Chandler claimed there is no evidence to show this would be the case and Asda's business property plans could create many jobs and improve the area's economy.
A spokesperson for Cheltenham Office Park, which submitted the proposals, stated: "We have worked closely with officers, residents and the highways authority to come up with a high-quality development and are happy to address any concerns councillors may have."
In May, Asda revealed it had agreed to purchase Netto Foodstores, which would see existing commercial properties operating under this name converted into Asda stores.
