Employers could look to improve energy efficiency in their business properties and reap financial rewards as a result.
This is according to Jim Haywood, environment director at Business in the Community, speaking at the Retail Now online event.
He explains UK businesses could save around £1 million a week if they improve the energy efficiency in their
commercial property and take action against climate change.
"Reducing energy consumption by just 20% can add the same sort of amount to profits as an increase in sales of something like 5%," Mr Haywood continued.
Leaving equipment switched on when nobody is in the office wastes an average of £6,000 per year for each commercial property, he added.
And he said taking steps against this could make firms more likely to meet legislation, such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.
Business property owners may have been interested in the Retail Now event, which took place on June 29th and 30th, as a conference on the future of the retail sector.
