There is a need for a new retail
commercial property development in Whitby, but caution needs to be taken to ensure the area's heritage is preserved.
This is the view of local MP Robert Goodwill, who was quoted by the Yorkshire Post as saying "the majority of people acknowledge that Whitby needs a new supermarket development".
A decision on whether to allow a new supermarket
business property development to go ahead in the town is due later this month, with Scarborough Borough Council meeting to vote on planning applications that have been submitted for the construction of new Tesco and Sainsbury's stores, as well as a proposed extension to the existing Co-op outlet.
Mr Goodwill acknowledged the plans have caused controversy among local residents and urged the council to look at each application "very carefully" before making a decision.
Whitby is also home to a major business park, while a similar development in Scarborough is set to double in size during the next two years.
