Retail giant Tesco is facing opposition over its decision to open a new
business property located in an area that could herald the disappearance of local shops, reports the South Wales Echo.
The company has a Tesco Extra on Cowbridge Road East in Cardiff and another on Western Avenue, but its new One Stop Store on Clive Road, Canton, just minutes away from the other two, has drawn criticism.
A petition to oppose the move has been launched by local residents who fear independent shops risk not only going bust because of the "Tesco triangle", but alcohol could be sold from 08:00 GMT to 23:00 GMT in the
commercial property premises.
Canton councillor Richard Cook told the website: "I think it is inappropriate to sell alcohol at that time in the morning." He added that cases of illegal parking could also increase once the new shop opens.
Tesco has a total of 4,811 stores worldwide, including 2,482 in the UK, which employ 472,000 people.
