A property development scheme costing £10.5 million will help to regenerate Pontypridd, it is hoped.
Rhondda Cynon Taf council revealed the plan will see property refurbishment, as well as repairs to the town's roads and street furniture, that will develop the area.
The funding will come from the Welsh Assembly Government via the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Targeted Match Funding, although the council will also provide a certain amount of finance.
Cabinet member for economic development and safer communities Paul Cannon said: "[It] is the largest single investment this town or any other in Rhondda Cynon Taf has ever seen and we are looking forward to [creating] a vibrant shopping centre for present and future generations."
Part of the scheme is the Pontypridd Townscape Enhancement Programme, where
commercial property owners can apply for funding to enhance the buildings and hopefully attract more shoppers.
Established in 1975, the ERDF was created to enable economic development to occur in areas of the European Union classed as less prosperous than others and it is managed in England by the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions.
