Commercial property investors should be encouraged to move to the countryside as this could bring huge economic advantages to parts of the UK.
This is according to the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), which suggests action is needed in order to keep rural areas alive.
The Rural Coalition has asked the government to accept proposals set out in its report, The Rural Challenge, which looks at way to enhance the future of the UK's countryside.
CLA vice-president Henry Robinson said: "New businesses must be encouraged into the countryside to provide new sources of income and employment."
He added many people in these areas believe the government "does not fully understand the relationship between rural businesses, rural life and the environment".
Established in 1907, the CLA has members including business, property and land owners in the rural parts of England and Wales.
It lobbies the government at national and international levels in order to put forward the views of those it represents.
