New
property development plans have been approved in Leeds in the hope of turning a
"riverside eyesore" into a new "urban quarter" for the city, it has been revealed.
Tens of billions of pounds are to be spent by developer Gladedale in order to build up to 1,400 flats at the former Yorkshire Chemicals site, as well as 31,000 sq m of offices, shops, pubs, restaurants and even a health centre for residents.
The city's council has already backed the scheme and planning consent is set to be granted as soon as a legal agreement relating to affordable housing measures and public transport improvements has been signed.
Councillor Elizabeth Nash said: "The sooner this scheme gets the go ahead the better because the area is an eyesore."
Another city to see large-scale development plans is Aberdeen, as the Scotsman recently revealed a £75 million hotel and office development will bring a boost to the local economy.
