Home and business owners need to ensure they take green issues into account when embarking upon property refurbishments, it has been suggested.
Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director for Sustain, said: "Everyone - utilities companies, house builders and homeowners - has to take responsibility for improving energy efficiency in homes."
Doing so should enable the UK to achieve its commitment to an 80 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050, he stated.
His comments come in response to claims by First Utility that there should be a review into the threshold which forces energy companies in the UK to meet a range of demands set by the British government.
Mr Miller has stated it is "only right" that gas and electricity suppliers contribute to the carbon emissions reductions target to ensure the amount of CO2 in British homes decreases.
The Energy Technologies Institute recently announced a new £3 million project has now got underway to improve the energy efficiency of the 26 million homes still expected to be in use by 2050.
